Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed” (a cover), and “something blue” (a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title.) The rest is history.

Something Old

This time around our “Something New” is "You Really Got Me" recorded by the English rock group the Kinks. It was written by Ray Davies. The song first dropped as a single in 1064. Later that year it was also included on their premiere platter titled simply Kinks.

Something New

Our “Something New” this edition is the new music video and song titled “Sycamore Canyon Mentality” by California-based singer-songwriter and musician Danny Sandock. The noteworthy track features lyrics co-written with Lori Copeland. It is featured on his fifth release, Throwin' Me For A Loop on Aardvark Records.

This song also includes background vocals by Leah Stewart. It’s available on Spotify, Amazon, iTunes, and 23 other download websites. The video is directed by Driven Films.

Something Borrowed

This edition’s “Something Borrowed” is "Take On Me" originally recorded by the Norwegian synth-pop group A-ha. It was first featured on the band's debut disc Hunting High and Low which dropped in 1985. This unique, calm cover is by musici Rex Pearson and features vocals by Tally Galtos.

Pearson said: “The song takes on a whole new meaning and was inspired by Ellie and the ‘Last Of Us 2’ unplugged version...If you don't know what I mean you need to play this game! That scene hits hard and inspired this version.”

He concluded: “I combined 2 of my favourite fingerstyle acoustic guitar versions and the famous Aha MTV Unplugged version of this song along with my own twist and the result is what you see right here! We performed this live in the room as you are seeing it.”

Something Blue

The “Something Blue” this time is the blues standard "Good Morning, School Girl.” It was first recorded by the Chicago blues harmonica pioneer and singerJohn Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson. The song has influenced numerous blues performers. It has since been covered by other artists under the title of "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl."
